COBE/FIRASの観測により5-96cm^-1の領域での銀河系内ダストのcontinuumspectraが明らかになった。
spectraは銀外系内の分子雲から放射されたintermediate-temperature emission(10-14K)により暖められたdustからの放射warm dust(16-21K) emission が優勢であった。また、spectraの広範囲に渡りvery cold component(4-7K)がwarm componentと同時に含まれていた。
