Overview

MOIRCS Deep Survey (MODS) is a deep near-infrared (NIR) imaging survey with Multi-Object Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) mounted on the Subaru telescope. Total integration time of ~124 hours were spent in the JHKs-bands imaging observations in the GOODS-North region. The MODS data reach 5sigma depth of J=24.2, H=23.1, and Ks=23.1 (Vega magnitude, 2xPSF FWHM diameter aperture) over 103 arcmin^2, and J=25.1, H=23.7, Ks=24.1 in 28 arcmin^2 of the survey area. These are one of the deepest NIR (especially in Ks band) images obtained to date. NIR data are essential for measuring the stellar mass of galaxies at z<3 and studying the stellar population of galaxies at 1<z<4 through the Balmer/4000A break. Combined with very deep HST and Spitzer data of the GOODS legacy survey, the MODS data enable us to reveal the stellar mass assembly history of galaxies at 1<z<4, when most of stars seen in the present universe are expected to have been formed. The very deep and high-quality NIR data are also essential for searching galaxies at z>7 and are very useful for identifying sources found by extensive multi-wavelength surveys in this region with Chandra, Herschel, SCUBA, MAMBO, AzTEC, VLA, and so on.

Field layout

  • 4 pointings of MOIRCS cover a field of ~105 (7 x 15) arcmin^2 of the GOODS-North region. (referred to as GT-1 to GT-4 field). The GT-2 field is the ultra-deep field of the MODS, where the total integration times are longer than the other fields.
